The Road to Calvary!
Jesus is traveling the road to Calvary.
And along the way several things happen.
Jesus Picks Up Some Admirers
The disciples don’t understand that Jesus is heading toward his death by the end of the week.
Jesus rides into Jerusalem, the disciples are joyous, the crowd is energized, and shouts of “Hosanna” ring out as he rides through the crowds.
Saying, blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
These are the crowds longing for freedom.
As the shouts of “Hosanna” ring out
“Hosanna” “Hosanna” “Hosanna”
And by the end of the week, those who admired Jesus on Sunday were shouting “Crucify him!”
“Crucify him” on Friday, what a turn of events.
I think of the parable of the sower and the seed
Mark 4:1-9 Jesus spoke of how glad they heard the Word and exited but at the end of the day, trials’ testing’s temptations, thorns of all sorts came and choked out the Word the Truth about Jesus.
This was the work of the enemy to choke out the Word from their heart.
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
Jesus said I came to give you life and life more abundantly.
That’s why I’m on the Road to Calvary
Jesus Picks Up Some Opposition
What was a jubilant scene of singing and shouting and celebration, the Pharisees hear all the commotion and says what all the big deal.
Rushing toward the sounds of joy and laughter, they quickly size up the situation:
These followers of Jesus are proclaiming him king!
And they say this can’t be!
And just as quickly, the Pharisees shout out to Jesus, “Rebuke your disciples!”
In other words, “Tell them to stop this nonsense. You’ll upset the Romans, and besides, you’re no king or messiah.”
Jesus reply is that even if he tells his followers to be quiet, and he answered and said unto them,
Verse 40 I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
Jesus Picked Up the Cross
But let’s not forget that the road Jesus traveled led not just to Jerusalem, but through its streets.
The road that Jesus walked was a road that did not end in the city.
It continued out the other side, through the city gates, to a hill called Golgotha, Calvary, and the Place of the Skull.
And it is on this road that Jesus picks up the cross.
Jesus picked up the cross willingly, sacrificially, and obediently.
Paul says, “He became obedient unto death, even death on a cross.”
Jesus said, “I lay down my life, and no one takes it from me.”
Because the road to Jerusalem was not the highway of Hosannas.
The road to Jerusalem was the road to Calvary.
Jesus knew it, the disciples didn’t.
Jesus walked it, the disciples only followed.
Jesus embraced it, his followers fled.
It is because Jesus picked up the cross and gave his life, that we can live.
